Damodar Kunda is one of Nepal’s most sacred and remote Himalayan pilgrimage sites, located in the Upper Mustang region of Gandaki Province, near the Tibetan border. Situated at an altitude of approximately 4,890 meters (16,043 feet) above sea level, this high-altitude alpine lake holds deep religious significance for both Hindus and Buddhists. Surrounded by dramatic trans-Himalayan landscapes, snow-covered peaks, and rugged cliffs, Damodar Kunda is not only a spiritual destination but also a place of extraordinary natural beauty.
According to Hindu belief, Damodar is a name of Lord Vishnu (Krishna), and the lake is considered extremely holy. It is believed that taking a sacred bath in Damodar Kunda helps cleanse sins and grants spiritual liberation (moksha). Many pilgrims visit to perform Shraddha rituals for their ancestors, believing that offerings made here bring peace to departed souls. The lake is also regarded as one of the sources of the sacred Kali Gandaki River, famous for Shaligram stones, which are worshipped as manifestations of Lord Vishnu.
Damodar Kunda is actually a group of several small lakes collectively known as Damodar Kunda. Due to its extreme altitude and harsh Himalayan climate, the area remains frozen for much of the year. The best time to visit is during the summer months, especially around Janai Purnima, when a special pilgrimage festival attracts hundreds of devotees from Nepal and India.
Reaching Damodar Kunda is both a spiritual and adventurous journey. The trip usually begins from Jomsom, passing through Lo Manthang and remote Mustang villages. Since it lies in a restricted area, special permits are required for foreign travelers. The route involves rugged terrain, high mountain passes, and basic camping conditions, making it suitable for well-prepared pilgrims and trekkers.
Beyond its religious importance, Damodar Kunda is deeply connected to the culture of the ancient Kingdom of Mustang, where Tibetan-influenced traditions, monasteries, and unique Himalayan lifestyles remain preserved. The peaceful atmosphere, vast landscapes, and powerful spiritual energy make Damodar Kunda one of Nepal’s most remarkable and sacred high-altitude pilgrimage destinations.
